I know this game is good and introduces so much to the Legend of Zelda franchise, but I find the combat so disheartening. Lack of IFrames and knockback when you get hit, as well as getting kicked all the way back to particular parts of the map makes going through A Link to the Past frustrating. While it has a good amount of content on its bones and has interesting puzzles and music, it just isn't clicking with me like later titles do.

I "Linked" in the future and it's still great
This, for me, is the game that truly raised the bar for SNES games, and the earliest game I can call timeless. The Dark World reveal is crazy, and the way the Light and Dark World flow together is honestly flawless. On top of that, the dungeon design is *chef's kiss* which is incredible considering the bland maze design of Zelda 1. So why no perfect score? Some mandatory items are easy to miss, and the text is very wordy (and boring) making it hard to care for the plot.

Precise Score: 9.1/10

My roommate got Ocarina of Time, and I was amazed by it. So while I waited for him to finish playing Ocarina of Time, I grabbed a Link to the Past assuming it would pale in comparison because it was 2D. Much to my surprise, the feel of the game was exactly the same.

I understand why people believe this game is the greatest 2D zelda of all time. It's interesting seeing how Ocarina of Time is basically this game translated into 3D. I think this game had the perfect balance of overworld exploration and dungeon crawling. Only issues are some things weren't obvious and needed assistance with, and the combat was pretty bad. Going from any of the 3D games to this one is like night and day. For the most part a good game that holds up pretty well, much better than its predecessors.

Best game on the SNES? A true masterpiece that defined and set the standard for the series. Besides a couple of nitpicks, the game has aged remarkably well. Only reason it’s not a 10 is because while I have lots of fun playing it, I’m not compelled to play it all the time, which is probably a good thing anyway!

A fantastic game that takes the foundation laid by Zelda 1 and builds upon it, creating an unforgettable classic.
My first experience was with the GBA port of the game, and where I first completed it.
I can't remember when I completed the GBA version, so I posted when I completed the SNES version on Wii Virtual Console.

Zelda; a link to the past, was one of my favorite games to play as a kid, and one that I played many times during winder break. Was also one of my favorite games to play on the SNES my brother and I got for Christmas.

A classic story, you play as the hero to be Link, and his quest to stop the plans of the evil Ganon. These plans involve kidnapping 7 maidens and using them to break a seal to unleash evil. So you quest across two dimensions to stop it.

Love this game, 11/10 will always enjoy it. Also has a very entertaining speed running scene, from using glitches to beat the game in 1.5 minutes, or in 1 hour 20 minutes without glitches.

Os bosses do jogo não tem o menor carisma e não são marcante como nos jogos seguintes, a mecanica do boss simplesmente RESETAR o progresso quando você faz a mecânica do mesmo não faz sentido.

A cornerstone in videogame history and the Zelda series in particular, but not one of my personal favorite.

Lore wise, it introduces the basis for the Zelda series going forward. But the story is told without much ambition, which is a bit of a shame (FF IV, released the same year, is a real game changer on this aspect). For all the other things that this game accomplishes, I won't comment this one further, as there is not much to say.

Exploration wise, it's a bit of a mixed bag. Still open, but much more "dirigist" than its predecessor, while not putting the proper guardrails to avoid "soft locks" (expl: fighting a boss that requires a missable item acquired in another dungeon, fighting a boss that requires magic items, but not giving ways to refill the magic bar during the boss fight). For you own sake, you are encouraged to follow the suggested order that the game gives you, and it's a bit of a shame as it does not bring anything narration wise... Also, the idea of an alternative world has been reused extensively in other Zelda titles, but in this one, I feel it's a bit of a mixed bag. It leads to some relatively interesting navigation challenges, but brings more trouble than necessary. A "solution" to a non existing problem in my opinion.

For the dungeons, I'm also a bit divised. Often, they do use too much of the same tricks (beating all the monsters in the same room, a bit too linear, mainly locks to get and that's it), but they also introduce some much better ideas (visual identity (even if a bit weak thematically wise and gameplay wise compared to what the display suggests), floors, verticality with items or Link that must fall from one floor to the other, playing with water level...), and those things will also become staples of the series.

I was probably spoiled by having played a lot of other Zelda games before this one, so it was more a curiosity of understanding its legacy and how it shaped the Zelda series as a whole. Maybe what I lacked the most with this one is this magic thing that gives it its own identity, like a Link's Awakening or Majora's Mask.
Also, playing it from start to end when I was younger would probably have led me to enjoy this one much more (as I was less exposed to much more games), but life is what it is. Silly me for borrowing my GBA cartridge to a friend and never getting it back when I was a child! Recontextualized, that's an easy 95, as the game streamlines and poses cornerstones for so many elements of Zelda but also ARPG in general, but I will keep it a bit lower in the context of my playthrough and for personal reference.

It's been over 20 years since the last time I've beaten this gem. Over the years I've started and stopped it numerous times, but for whatever reason with it being 10 years since A Link Between Worlds and soon the new Zelda game at the end of the month I took this month as an opportunity to play through the GBA port on NSO. Boy howdy does this one still hold up. The entire time I played through it was just a delight. Sure the final dungeon is filled with some late-game BS, sure some aspects didn't age well and sure there was one part that I thought was legitimately impossible until I checked gamefaqs and realized it was simply a controller lag issue, but beyond those slight imperfections lies a game that's distilled fun. The GBA port holds up very well. Links constant soundbytes from Ocarina of Time hold up decently and otherwise the game looked and sounded just as good as I remember it on SNES.

Speaking of looking things up, I was pleasantly suprised that my ingenuity and memory of the old game held up so well that I blasted through the game some odd 20, 25 years later. Only one other time in the game did I need to look up something and even then I probably could've figured it out had I not mixed up some memories on how to open the 4th dungeon with what to do. Also that fortune teller was completely useless! Definitely a top 10 all-timer for me and I'll definitely dive back in one of these days. Perhaps an item randomizer run. But first I'm craving more 2D Zelda.

I can see why this game has such a strong following and people remember it so fondly. The dungeons dont over stay their welcome and are fairly intuitive. The sound design and pixel art also hold up really well. This is my first top down LOZ game so I wasnt sure what to expect but all in all I can say that I enjoyed my journey, though it took a bit longer than expected. For its age it doesnt get much better.

+Game holds up pretty well and has a lot of innovative features that would return in future games

-Combat can be a little annoying at times since you cant attack at a diagonal and the dungeons become repetitive mostly changing color and adding more enemies and traps
-Certain items are very obscure and difficult to find naturally even a couple needed for progression, however I understand that is how games were back then

For the time period and the constraints of the SNES: It doesn't get any better than Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. (Well, wait, Chrono Trigger and some others roll in at a tie. None of them really beats out the others though.) I honestly think they made a perfect game. Lots of interesting environment interactions, plenty of little secrets, lots of character heart (npcs and Link), tons of fun items to use, and the dungeons.... shooooweeee. The dungeons in this game are epic. The devs went above and beyond with dungeon design. One homerun after another. This game just feels good. They did a really good job with it. Well done LoZ devs if you ever read this. You did a really good job. 10/10

A timeless classic.

Good
- The animations and overall graphics detail is amazing
- the world is immense for SNES game.
- dungeon design is very impressive. Puzzles are deep and reasonably challenging.
- controls are crisp. Upgrades are cool and fun to use.

Bad
- the sword hitbox doesn't exactly match the animation.
- moon pearl, a required item should not be missable, but it is. I was going in circles wondering where to find it. Turned out to be in a chest in a previous dungeon.
- the game doesn't tell me that there are other ways to enter the dark world after beating the dark palace. This causes me to try and enter through the mountain pad entrance and try and find a way off the mountain, which was not possible
- swamp palace. How am I supposed to know I'm supposed to randomly walk into a waterfall? 6 waterfalls that look identical. I'm supposed to walk through
- I wish locked doors would be marked. And chests would be marked.
- no hints were given that i had to use the fire rod to burn the entrance of the dark temple. The skull shows no indication that it could be burned.
- Titan's mitts is missable in gargoyle palace, which is required to get into ice palace. Meaning I was completely stuck not knowing what I needed, until I refer to a guide.
- game forces player to explore every nook and cranny to get potentially required items
- quake medallion is required to reach final dungeon but it's missable. And I have to somehow know the order to hit the pikes to open the warp to dark world for last dungeon.
- the game forces you to explore and do random quests to acquire required upgrades like silver Arrow to beat Ganon. I don't like how these important things are missable.
- no price tag for super bomb. How am I supposed to know how much rupees to collect?

Alongside ICO, this is one of the “muses” of video games that developers often cite as a large source of inspiration for their games, and with good reason. When I first played A Link to the Past in 2017 on my SNES Classic, I enjoyed what I played, but I found myself preferring its sequel, A Link Between Worlds on Nintendo 3DS, a little bit more. Nearly seven years later, I decided to replay the game given that its remake on GBA was made available via Nintendo Switch Online's expansion pass last month, to determine if my opinions on the game have changed. Spoilers for the review: they have not.

Don't get me wrong, this is still a fantastic game at the end of the day. It defined the core gameplay structure of The Legend of Zelda series for the next two decades, and I believe none of it has aged poorly. However, on the basis on personal opinion, I still prefer A Link Between Worlds. They're both very similar gameplay wise, but they do differ structurally. I think what disappointed me the most when playing through A Link to the Past were the dungeons. With the exception of a few dungeons towards the end of the game, they all look visually identical, and there is zero variety in music between them all. Furthermore, I just found myself to be simply progressing from one dungeon to another during the majority of second-half of the story, with little to do in between. Of course, this may have been a consequence of me not completing the game to 100%, but playing through the main story in 12 hours just didn't provide me the opportunity to engage with this iteration of Hyrule. Still, as mentioned before, the game's many positives really shine through to make it one of the SNES' all time greats. Personally though, I see no reason to revisit this game in a world where ALBW exists to tell a similar story in the same Hyrule.

Not much of a retro gamer, and I didn't find this one too much fun, as it was kinda boring to me. I know at the time it was definitely a banger, but I'm not a huge fan of it. It plays out how'd you'd expect it to, and never caught my interest too much. The dungeons were a good size, as they were not-too-enormous to give me a headache.
One thing that really bugged me in the game was how you needed random items at random times to progress in the story. For example, you need the Ice Rod to defeat one of the bosses, but you don't find out until the boss fight, and the item is just in some random cave in the map without it telling you anything. It happened a lot, and was super annoying.
This game was tiresome for me, and didn't click all too well. I don't know why some consider it one of the best games of all time. At the time I'm sure it was really great, but now it just isn't too exciting. It holds up well in terms of gameplay and graphics, but I'd rather play a newer Zelda game.

I've tried to play through this game countless times over the years and genuinely don't understand the high praise for it. The music and art direction is top-notch -- as to be expected from a Zelda game -- and this gives the game an excellent atmosphere.

However, this immersion is constantly interrupted by some of the worst combat and hit detection in the series, not to mention some absolutely terrible enemies/bosses and level design within the Dark World portions of the game (a major "FUCK YOU" to Mothula in particular). It's a shame too because the game is very enjoyable until the Dark World gets introduced, which is when the quality starts to fluctuate.

A Link Between Worlds is so much better and renders this game obsolete.

I've used a guide to get some of the extras before finish the game, and yet the last battle was hard. It is a fantastic game!

The only problem I have, not just with this game but with the entire franchise, is the lack of instructions on how to follow the story, however, normally when I feel lost I use a guide and move on, but I understand that is the idea of the game to make the player explore everything possible to, not only continue with the story, but also look for extras, such as more hearts or improvements to weapons, armor and items in general.

I grew up on late SNES games, so I never understood the hype of this early SNES Zelda with non pre-rendered graphics. I really enjoyed Link's Awakening and all the other retro Zelda, but something about ALttP, I just don't like. I think the bosses, and dungeons are a disappointment.

I tried to beat this several times, but just got bored. Not really interested in the dark world mechanic. Eventually I finally forced myself to beat it, just so I could say that I beat every Zelda.

Still Zelda, still better than Phantom Hourglass or Triforce Heroes, but....probably the worst main Zelda not on a DS

A Link Between Worlds, that's a good Zelda. I'm not so sure why I don't like ALttP specifically. I even own the manga and enjoyed that.
