I don't think Valve has technically made a good Single Player game since L4D2, and considering HL:A is behind a gigantic paywall of entry, I can't say for sure if that is a game I would even like. But, when I found out you could use a regular controller for this short game, I tried it out immediately and I got to say, this is some of Valve's best work in years. Graphically, it's absolutely beautiful, the details on Grady are fantastic and the real time physics destruction, especially in the first turret test is absolutely phenomenal. And for it's story and worldbuilding, this is a VERY good look into the early world of Half-Life and Portal, with a gigantic twist at the end that will blow any Valve fan's mind. But what really makes this a true showpiece for the future of Valve is how much interactivity the game offers. At one point, you have to use your mouse to sign papers, but not only do you need to use your keyboard for a specific part, but the game tells you to speak into your microphone and the game plays back your recorded voice which is something games rarely use in single player terms.I think what makes this so interesting though is that you are the character in the game. The person playing this is the one who is involved in all this. You're not behind some name like Chell or Gordon Freeman or Francis or Coach, you're you which I think gives the player the power and immersion to really get behind this game's events. It's very clear Valve have been very busy with their games department and without a doubt, with a new Half-Life game going to be announced soon, I seriously cannot wait to see the future of what Valve brings. An Xbox Controller can be used to play this easily and 95% of the features intended for this game work on a controller besides Gyroscope. It's a truly interesting experience that gives more life into the world of Half-Life and Portal at the earliest point possible in it's timeline. Very much recommended if you either have a controller or the proper hardware to play it on.

Aperture Desk Job is a free game that sets out to teach you about all the features of your Steam Deck and it does so with great humor delivered by Nate Bargatze. It keeps things short while giving you plenty to laugh about. It was definitely worth 30 minutes of my time and I could see myself playing it again a couple years from now just to laugh again at all the little jokes and quips.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

Played on my steam deck this time! Now that I know what happens in the story, its frankly not as good the 2nd time around I will admit. However, I do remember enjoying it a lot the first time so maybe that's why I didn't like it as much.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

Beat the game in a sitting. Meant really as a demo for the tech in the steam deck. Was giving oculus “first steps” vibes but I was not complaining at all, I’m always down for anything portal related or themedUpdated 2.5 Months Ago

Great graphical showcase for the steam deck. Couldn't believe that a portable device could run games like this. The gyro controls didn't consistently work which may be an issue with my Steam Deck instead of the game, but it impacted the shooting sections a small bit. It's great to return to the Portal universe and i wish valve got off their asses and made another one.

If you have a steam deck, play this before you do anything else. It's a tech demo to highlight hardware features, but it's great. :)Updated 8 Months Ago

Fun little game for the steam deck, though honestly I don't think it did a great job demonstrating the steam decks various features. Can't complain much though, and I enjoyed the silly dark humor the Portal series is known for, and ive always been a fan of the "old" Aperture look so it was fun to get more of that.Updated 10.5 Months Ago

Aperture Desk Job is a fun, weird little experience with the kind of polish and style you expect from Valve and the Portal universe. The main supporting character is humorous but also sort of relatable, and you get to learn a bit more about Aperture and Cave Johnson, with some interesting moments and spectacle. It's funny and quirky and an enjoyable little free experience that's worth trying out. It's clearly designed as a companion game for the Steam Deck, and as a way to show off some of its features, so it suffered a little by playing with an Xbox controller on PC, but it worked well enough. I found it an amusing way to kill 40 minutes.

A fun little adventure to add to the world of Aperture Science. I'm glad to see that Valve still have their humor and fun factor. I just wish the game was longer and provided more background on the history of Aperture Science.PROS:
- Funny and fun
CONS:
- Too short
- Volume control is all over the place
