The black sheep of the Gears of War franchise? I don't know about that. I enjoyed my time with this one, especially in co-op. Sure the campaign's story isn't very good, but the additions that they made to try to mix up the Gears of War formula were very welcome (minus the 2 weapon limit, whoever thought that was a good idea is dumb). I thought the holdout scenarios where you set up turrets and fight through waves of enemies was a definite highlight, and I liked how the missions were more arcade focused and encouraged competition between you and your co-op partner. The declassified system is also really fun too, adding a challenge to each mission.Overall, this one is definitely worth a play through if you are a Gears or third person shooter fan.

Missing the epicness of 2nd and 3rd. Not a bad game but bit bland. Innovation comes in form of declassified mission which is basically an option during each mission to add some extra difficulty (limited time, weapon, …). Rest is nothing new, IA of companion is slightly better but still not incredible, hopefully this is one of the easiest gears game so far.Updated 8.5 Months Ago

Played in Coop.I thoroughly enjoyed this game more-so than I thought I would. The story is actually very well done, except for the fact that they're holding a court hearing literally in the middle of the battlefield. This was also the funniest damn thing they could have done and they played it perfectly straight, which just made it even funnier. This is also a prequel where they introduce a character that isn't in any other game and they don't kill him off, so they have to add in a section that happens at the end of 3 (I think) as a way to send him off and tie it up like a little bow tie. I think he should have died protecting the group at the end - you know, the group that he spent the entire game saying he hated - but maybe that would have been way too cliche. Instead, he fucks off and tells you he still doesn't like you. The End.
It's not one that you need to play if you're playing through the Gears series, but it's definitely one I wouldn't pass up. It's a recommendation from me.

I'm a stickler for being thorough when it comes to playing through series of games, so I played Gears of War Judgment prior to 2, but after 1. (I know it takes place before 1, I didn't know that prior)It definitely feels like Judgment doubled down on the Co-Op experience since you're just moving mission to mission with minimal story involved. I suppose that's fine, but I can see why some Gears fans don't really like it.
But it has Sofia in it! How can you not love that!

Title: Gears of War: JudgmentGenre: third person cover shooter
Platform: Xbox 360
Region release played: USA
Year of release: 2013
Developer: People Can Fly, Epic Games
Publisher: Microsoft Studios
Graphics: 4/5
Audio: 3/5
Challenge: 3/5
Fun factor: 3/5
Premise: The last hurrah for Gears of War on the Xbox 360. This time Epic Games let another studio do most of the development; People Can Fly (ridiculous name for a studio). The plot is a prequel to the original trilogy, based on a military trial because the protagonists disobeyed orders to save some soldiers. Game design focuses strongly on big open areas with loads of enemies, often via tower defense scenarios. Somehow this game cost $60,000,000.00 to develop?!; Embezzlement of War.
+Very strong graphics (technically speaking) for Xbox 360.
+That same ol' GoW split-screen co-op goodness.
+Difficulty is better balanced than previous GoW entries.
+This game knew when it was time to be done.
+There's an unlockable GoW3 mini-campaign included.
-Barely any innovation over previous GoW games.
-Way too much tower defense for my tastes.
-The few (two?) new weapons are not great.
-Only one actual boss in the main campaign.
-Squad dialogue not as humorous as earlier GoW entries.
Conclusive thought: The verdict is Judgement's a bit of fluff for series fans craving a GoW snack.

Great little spinoff that is a goodbye to classic Gears, even if it wasn't made by Epic. It has a more arcadey gameplay with a simple controller scheme and pontuation driven goals. Then you unlock a fantastic mini campaign that feels like peak Gears 3 DLC, showing what Baird and Cole were doing during the final act of Gears 3 campaign. The flashback story is also great, with a badass presentation in a court room and great ending. There is also a cool new character that returns in Gears 5. This is underrated stuff, the game is a lot of fun and looks beautiful, but if you're binge playing the series, save for the last because of the different controller scheme.Updated 1 Year Ago

Probably my least favorite of the 6 Gears of War games so far but it was still super enjoyable. I loved the declassified missions and how they added some grit and challenge to experience. I also thought the character additions were decent but could have used some work. The level design and firefights were great though.Updated 2.5 Years Ago

A half-assed arcadey spinoff that seems to exist because Microsoft had a release slot to fill and a franchise to fill it with, not because anyone involved wanted to make a Gears of War game. The gameplay is more Gears of War and it's fine, but the single-player campaign feels deliberately low-stakes and nothing about it makes any lasting impression whatsoever.Updated 3 Years Ago

The game plays as a very competent shooter. Judgement still has the same great cover mechanics and feel that all the other gears games do, but it is clear that it is just running whatever Gears 3 did. The game looks great, it doesn't use the lower quality FMVs for cutscenes like Gears 3 did, and it is a fairly good length. While it isn't a bad game, there are just so many things that the other gears games did better. First, lets talk about controls. They have been changed to be more similar to other shooters like Halo. Y now switches weapons instead of the D pad, and grenades are now mapped to the left bumper. Instead of having two main weapons plus a side arm, you can now just carry 2 weapons. Never any more than that. Grenades control a bit more clunky now that they are mapped to a shoulder button. To blind throw a grenade, just tap the button. To aim it, hold before releasing. To cancel throwing it, SWITCH WEAPONS while aiming the grenade. And to tag an enemy or a wall, first aim the grenade, then melee. This makes tagging grenades much, much slower and you can no longer pull a grenade out, sprint with it up to your target, and tag them. Also, grenades can now be aimed from behind cover. This makes throwing grenades have no risk while giving you the advantage of putting and explosive behind your opponent's cover. It's too high a reward for a virtually zero-risk tactic, and feels unbalanced.
The second aspect in which Judgement falls short is it's story. Sure, the campaign is a decent length, but everything is told from the perspective of Kilo squad on tribunal telling their story of what they did at the battle of Halvo Bay. There is no wondering if the characters made it out okay because we already know, and no real plot development because the gears are just recounting events for the first 4 acts of the game. The fifth act does jump back to the present, but there is no story arc driving it forward. The antagonist has no presence, only showing up at the very beginning to tell you what you're going to kill and showing up at the very end for you to kill. The story doesn't even tie in directly to the other games. The events of Judgement have no impact on Gears 1, 2, or 3. And the events of judgement aren't even mentioned in those games. They could have done much better by making a game about the pendulum wars, or the battle that Marcus Fenix left to go help his Dad. Those are impactful in the other games. Karn is not.
Next, there is the mission structure. Each chapter is one or two encounters long. Each encounter can be played normally or "Declassified" where certain restrictions are imposed on the player such as using only specific weapons, or additional tougher enemies join the fray. The missions are good in that they offer a new way to challenge the player while also giving unique challenges and teaching the player how to adapt, however each mission has too defined a start and end point. It breaks up the gameplay too much and makes it feel less organic. Instead of playing through the story as a whole, I felt like I was playing through 50 individual battles. What would have been great is if the declassified missions unveiled different pathways through the story.
Overall, a fairly good game, but I'll never go back to it because the other gear games are more enjoyable. 77/100

I only played the campaigns because I don't give a shit about multiplayer so this review is for the campaigns only.I love Gears 1, 2, and 3 but I didn't like this one that much. There are two campaigns: Judgement and Aftermath. You have to play through Judgement to unlock Aftermath so let's talk about Judgement first.
I didn't enjoy Judgement at all. It's pretty much just a series of shootouts, one after another. Each level involves a hallway, then an open area with grubs, and then another hallway to a door where you exit the level. The goal of each level is to rack up as many stars out of 3 as you can by playing as well as you can. There is this gimmick called "declassified missions" which makes it easier to rack up the 3 stars by doing a challenge during the level, such as completing the level within a set time or using a certain set of weapons only. I don't enjoy "arcadey" challenges like this as part of a main story so I only did a few at first and then decided to skip the rest of them. You need 40 stars to unlock aftermath but thank god you can easily do so without doing any declassified missions, at least on normal.
On top of this, they changed the gameplay. The controls are different and you only get 2 weapons now, which is lame. Your squad's AI also seems to be way worse, as they always run up to the enemy and get in the way of your shots, making some of the more challenging fights even more so, but for the wrong reasons. Plus, there is barely any story, and what little there is bored me out of my mind. The characters are all boring as well, even though you get Baird and Cole, two of my favorites, but they don't have their lovable personalities from the previous games. I get that this is a prologue to the entire series so far, but you mean to tell me the Cole Train was boring at one point? I don't believe it. Also, there is barely any party banter in between levels (something that got me to love all of the characters in the previous games), which makes me care about the characters even less.
Aftermath, on the other hand, is an absolute joy to play. This campaign feels like the last 3 games. The story is way better than Judgement and Cole and Baird are back to normal. And there is party banter in between shootouts. The gameplay is pretty much the same as Judgement, but your squad mates are way smarter and act like they do in the previous games. Unfortunately, Aftermath only lasts an hour and a half, whereas Judgement took me a little over 5 hours.
Overall, this game is a poor continuation of the series. Both campaigns feel like DLC, and it would've been better (less scummy) if Epic just made them both DLC for 3, rather than combining them into its own game and selling it for 60 bucks at launch. At least the graphics and music are as great as always. If only you could just play Aftermath without having to suffer through Judgement.

It's an alright game, but I'm starting to get tired of the dues ex machina of the main campaign. I do think there are ways in which this game has improved from 3, both in MP and in Campaign, but it's also so similar that people just stuck to 3 because it was familiar. This is around that era where Xbox exclusives started to dip in quality.Updated 3.5 Years Ago

I know I give it a 5, and don’t get me wrong, I thought it was fun and enjoyed it the whole time...but it was just an arcade shooter. I didn’t like the way the campaign was set up, the story was bland and short as hell, the enemies were ANNOYING, and the whole control scheme being switched messed me up badly as I have been marathoning the series. It's been a while since I've played a Gears game, in fact the last one I played was Gears 4; I use the word "played" lightly, because I only messed around with horde and multiplayer before setting it aside. I never touched the campaign. It's not that I don't like Gears games, I've played the majority of the series after all, they're just... something of an acquired taste. The flattering word for the gameplay would be "weighty", but it just comes off as cumbersome to me half the time. It's also a third person cover shooter game, which means that no matter how much character you give your series (which Gears is absolutely drenched in and is one of the best things about it) it still feels like a hamburger to me. Your hamburger may be great, but it's still something I can get at almost every eatery around. Judgement has the strength of a unique storytelling format, some new characters that flesh out the Gears world more (which is criminally underrepresented in my opinion), and some tweaks to the controls that are difficult to get used to at first if you've played the previous entries, but I found they worked really well after putting in the time. All in all, I like this game, and it's motivated me to go back to Gears 4 and play that campaign that I've left forgotten for so long.Updated 5.5 Years Ago

I would give this a 2/5 if I was being more fair, because the game does look okay on a technical level, but actually playing this game all the way through feels worse than chores. It's downright painful to sit through, missing every element that makes a Gears game fun. The step down in polish and care is beyond noticeable going straight from Gears 3 to this. The prequel story it tells isn't even worth it, it's all pointless. Avoid.Updated 5.5 Years Ago

Gears of War Judgement takes place before the events of the prior-released trilogy, acting as a backstory for two of the main characters seen in the aforementioned games, as well as filling a sort of gap in Gears of War 3. The campaign is noticeably shorter than the other games, but is told through the perspective of each squad member and further compensated by the addition of a scoring system and special challenges for each chapter that provide it with added replayability and depth. The cover and shooting mechanics are at least as solid as Gears of Wars 2, though I admittedly enjoyed this game more, providing a solid cover-based TPS.Unless you like multiplayer, I wouldn't spend too much on it, but if you like Gears of War or if you like TPSes and got it as part of Games with Gold or the Gears of War Ultimate Edition Xbox One bundle, it's worth playing, especially if you like replaying games under different conditions or difficulties or to try and get all the achievements. Over all, I think it's better than Army of Two TDC but not as good as TFD and recommend it to any TPS or GoW fan.

Game was much better than expected based on the poor reviews I've heard from it. Same great Gears of War fighting along with a decent story line. You play as 4 characters including Baird recreating the reason you stole a missile and used it against orders to try to show your innocence. As you tell the story you play each character. Playing the characters doesn't change the game play at all though so not really sure why they threw that in but you play whoever is talking. In the end the building you're on trial in gets attacked and you fight your way through it. Eventually you meet back up with the commander that was court martial-ing you and help him survive/kill the final boss. He demotes Baird from a lieutenant to private but that's basically the extent of it. He dropped the charges otherwise. Game seemed a bit rushed compared to other Gears of Wars games but if it didn't have that franchise tag on it anyone would think this was a fantastic game. It is slightly behind the others but I stress slightly. Good game. Also it threw in challenges you could accept but didn't have to that would include getting through a section with only shotguns, finishing in a certain time, etc that they made part of the story and made it more challenging and more fun because before I started taking them it was too easy.Updated 8 Years Ago
