The story is fine, but nothing special and maybe even pointless if you really look at it hard. The choice to add one single narrative decision is incredibly stupid. The gameplay is more frustrating than fun, it's not a responsive or satisfying shooter, and the cover system is as annoying as ever.Updated 4 Weeks Ago

As far as co-op campaign games go, this is a good time. Unlike 4, this game has more atmosphere in its levels, less forced run to the end sections, bosses were a bit more interesting, and the level design encourages slowing down and exploring to find upgrades for Jack. I personally enjoyed the open sections as they helped break up the pacing from the usual Gears room to room combat encounter structure. In general, this game is MUCH more engaging than Gears 4, which I felt had a super fast paced story that ended suddenly. I did miss the co-op split up sections, but I'm glad the horde mode point defense sections are gone. I would honestly recommend skipping 4 unless you really wanted to play through more Gears.

Enjoyed my time here overall, ending chapter was by far the best out of the four. Gunplay and overall gameplay felt ok, I'm not a huge fan of third person shooting, but it was ok. (Definitely need to use a controller, keyboard and mouse felt bad).Great sound design and music, especially that ending track, my god.
Overall, the middle of the game felt like a drag with chapters 2 and 3 essentially being the same kid of thing. But the gameplay and enemy variety felt good.

Just played through Gears of War 1-4, so Gears 5 was next. In my opinion, it’s a top tier game. Excellent gameplay, great music, great sound, I like the characters. Easily kept me entertained throughout the campaign and I finished no problem. Did not get bored and it did not overstay its welcome. Insane difficulty was perfect for me. I did all the side quests, which was a good amount of extra content.I also play multiplayer. I’m ok at it. I really like it bc it’s not run and gun like call of duty or other easy to pick up shooters. It takes a while to get good.
9/10 bc 3 times a Swarm enemy would just get stuck in place and I would easily kill it

I've been slowly playing through this franchise over the last few years and I'm a big fan of every single one so far, but there are definitely some I like more than others and I'd say this one's right in the middle for me. Gears 1 is a masterpiece of action horror - 2, 3, and Judgment while still very good were mostly more of the same but without the horror, and then I thought the 4th entry was awesome because it brought a little of that horror back and updated the gameplay. Just continuing to do what made that one great would've been acceptable to me, but now Gears 5 steps in with several more sweeping changes, some of which land perfectly and some I could've done without. Having a cute little robot sidekick that you can order around to complete puzzles and assist during combat may sound gimmicky, but it actually adds a lot of interesting complexity to what has traditionally been extermely straightforward gameplay - that was risky but it paid off. And with the exception of the original game I think this story is probably the most interesting, the most emotionally satisfying, and probably the weirdest which is saying something. Also can we just take a moment to appreciate the talent of Laura Bailey? I always knew she was good but it seemed like every little throw away line she had in this she was just pouring her heart into it, it was awesome to hear. To wrap up the win column here, this is a very little thing but it fascinated me - the transitions from gameplay to pre-rendered cutscene and vice versa were probably the best I've ever come across. Most games are happy to just give you a black screen for a moment or maybe cut away to a different character or backdrop during those transitions, but you can tell that whoever was in charge of this detail did their damndest to make it look seamless, and I thought it really added to the immersion. Now all that stuff was great but I do think there were a few flies in the ointment here, starting with the tacked on open world segments in what has always been a linear franchise. When these are done right they are the freaking best, like in The Evil Within 2 or The Tomb Raider Reboots or the new God of War games, but here they felt almost totally unnecessary. If you're gonna go that route, those sections either need to be required or you need to give me a really good reason to stray from the beaten path, like some awesome gear or a max health upgrade or something. But I did a couple of optional things in those sections and all I got was some weapons which are a dime a dozen anyway, or maybe some components for the aforementioned robot companion. I initially loved that you had upgrade points you could spend to add a mild RPG element to the mix, but in practice those upgrades didn't actually turn out to be very impactful, so I eventually just starting skiffing right past them. Last but definitely not least, remember how I said I loved that they brought a little bit of the horror element back in the 4th game? Well I guess they decided that wasn't working because it's pretty much gone here. There are moments that you could consider somewhat tense, but that atmospheric tone that had your heart racing as you peaked around corners and into the dark is gone, and it's back to just balls to the wall action now. But balls to the wall action is still a lot fun, and while I don't think it's quite as good as Gears 4 or the original of course, I did enjoy it slightly more than 2, 3, and Judgment.Updated 2 Months Ago

Decent game, but has a lot more potential. The gameplay was polished and the controls are amazing on controller. However, the story tried to be serious but felt kinda cheap, I sometimes didn't know what to do because the game didn't tell me, and the Matriarch boss fight is complete BS (had to switch off controller for that one, it was too annoying, long and aim-heavy).
Might play a newer game once it comes out, but it's not a guarantee.

Very impressive on performance side (graphism and animation). Game has some interresting new stuff (upgradabke bot, new vehicules), story is not that exciting. While the tone isn't nearly as dark or gritty as the earlier entries, the gameplay is absolutely top-notch, and for a series like Gears, that to me, is the selling point. Pros:• Overall excellent graphics and vivid visuals. Graphics and detail in open-world missions look worse, most likely for optimization. Graphics in corridor missions are excellent, I prefer them.
• Story-wise, a direct and very successful continuation of Gears 4. The story continues to evolve, it is deeper and more thoughtful than in the first part, especially in terms of character relationships and their development. This approach to the story continues the excellent initiatives of the previous part.
• Dialogues include both familiar pathos, drama, and humor - a good set.
• Corridor missions are very interesting and lively, completed in one breath.
• A decent set of missions with an "open world" between them in the second act. Combines well-implemented vehicle driving, secret searching, and unique additional activities, as well as completing main tasks in neighboring parts of the map. Quite interesting and voluminous, while all these activities do not become too long and monotonous, which prevents them from becoming notorious "grinds" and getting boring.
• Cool segment of riding a skiff through a storm, very thrilling.
• Epic, albeit quite simple, battle with the Kraken in the 3rd chapter.
• Emotional and epic finale, full of adrenaline, shooting, chases, explosions, and empathy. With a great potential for continuation.
• Overall, the gameplay feels dynamic, lively, and adrenaline-filled. Shooting is still good, additional abilities have made it more interesting than in previous installments. The addition of an enhancement timer after perfect reloading is appreciated!
• Interesting new mechanics for cover - for example, the ability to knock over vertical cover and make it horizontal.
• Intriguing weapon variants among relics, very useful additional properties.
• Jack's abilities and their upgrades are also a nice addition, helping to make each battle more comfortable and interesting. Examples with minimal spoilers, as they appear in the very first chapter: 1) When aiming, you can ask Jack to bring you items (and weapons), which is very useful at certain moments, a good mechanic. 2) Adding the scanning feature - a great idea, implemented both mechanically and narratively.
• Ramin Djawadi's music is magnificent!
Cons:
• Ally and enemy AI occasionally leaves something to be desired - allies sometimes don't realize that the entire enemy squad has already been killed (because they were killed during the duration of one invisibility, thanks to the imbalanced upgrade), enemies get stuck on stairs, some character can't manage to reach the door to help open it, or an NPC just can't take one extra step to make the platform finally move in one of the missions. This also reveals a questionable approach to scripts - when NPCs, due to such bugs, do not move to the right point following the player, but stand still, bumping into the wall. If anything, I had to throw a grenade at an ally to make him finally stop standing still and waiting, not reaching the necessary spot literally 1 step away.
• Another issue with NPCs - Jack is absolutely uncontrollable and sometimes disappears. At one point in the mission, he disappeared somewhere, after which I couldn't scan the area until the next cutscene with opening doors, or even walk normally through the dark corridor, as nobody reacted to the phrase "Jack, we need some light." Also, it's irritating that there's no possibility to manually shine a flashlight somewhere, only the area in front of Jack is illuminated, which, although realistic and plausible, is very inconvenient.
Overall impression:
• An excellent third-person cover shooter, preserving the old mechanics of the series, which, it seemed, were about to become hopelessly outdated, but still manage to hold on and make the gameplay interesting and dynamic (which is surprising). The story is cohesive, emotional, and interesting, I was very satisfied. The main downside is the AI of allies and enemies, as well as the overall antiquity of the concept, which desperately needs a breath of fresh air. Despite the flaws and some staleness, the game turned out to be splendid, I definitely recommend it.
• I can't evaluate either the cooperative or the multiplayer, as I haven't tried either.

"To sum it up, 8 out of 10. Would do it again."In my opinion, this is a return to form for the Gears series. The style of gameplay that Gears is known for (cover and shoot) is still here, but with some added wrinkles that make it feel unique as a Gears game. There is some light stealth mechanics added in to help those who don't want to go guns blazing from the start. There are also abilities for Jack that can be used to aid you in combat. The abilities can be upgraded to stronger versions by finding upgrade parts scattered throughout the open world sections. I wasn't a huge fan of the way you have to scavenge for the upgrades. I pretty much found the one upgrade I really wanted and ignored the rest. I liked the addition of Jack abilities however because the Gears formula after 5 games just seems a little repetitive for me. The new abilites kept the combat entertaining. The narrative was a little fractured at times. Some of the story elements just seemed out of place or weren't carried through to completion. Overall, it was a solid game and I enjoyed the roughly 12 hours it took me to complete it.

Good gears game, it improves in some areas compared to previous games, like how it doesn't feel as obvious that you are moving from one kill room to another. However, at times the game seems to be designed to have you die, and then achieve victory thanks to the foresight gained from the first death. I also felt that narratively the move from act 2 to act 3 was a bit too abrupt.
All in all, good Gears game for fans of the series.

Gears 5 was a gear game? It was fine? Nothing really to cry home about. They are known for their cool reload mechanics with the third person cover shooter and there was plenty of that but at the end of the day it was not the gameplay or mechanics that gave points to this game but the community. Lets start with the bad, I did not like how you could just randomly die from an explosion that you never saw coming and then have to restart from a checkpoint. It was frustrating game design that I thought I was safe but nope you are dead good luck butter cup. That was not fun, I honestly would have preferred a Ubisoft “Hey there is a grenade you should run” notification to get rid of this announce.
However on the good side of things there are two major points I want to bring up. Firstly the level design with the sleds was such a cool feature of the game I must give points to them for that sort of addition. There is one level in the Last of Us 2 where you run around to different buildings and explore on a horse and I loved it. It made me feel that same feeling in these two sections which is a good thing.
The other thing I want to point out is this games community. I made my single player lobbies open for anyone to play with me and holy shit when I say every single time I was playing a level someone joined my lobby and helped me through the process. Now I was not able to experience all the mechanics, yeah, but at the end of the day it made it way more fun to do PVE with Randoms. I Highly recommend if you play through this game to turn on your lobby to the public for some Randoms in co-op. I had a wonderful time with those that had a mic and without.
With one minor point and two major points I give Gears 5 a solid 6/10 a very average score for an average game that does a few things right overall. If you like the gears games it is much more of the same in my humbled opinion.

This was my second time around playing Gears 5 and I must say, it is a significant step up in every way from Gears of War 4. Not that Gears of War 4 is a bad game, it's just that each entry in Gears of War series has been a very good if not great game, and Gears 4 was just pretty good.Gears 5 was launched on the Xbox one, but thanks to Microsoft's smart delivery system, putting the disk into a Series X console results in you getting to play an updated version of the game with better visual presentation, and nearly locked 60fps gameplay throughout the entire experience. In terms of visuals, it's one of the most impressive of the xbox one generation no matter which console you play it on, but it's particularly impressive on the Series X. So much so, that I'm surprised to see games that have come out in 2023 target significantly lower resolutions and sometimes even 30fps gameplay. Now, I know that the Coalition has some former Epic Games employees and their expertise with the unreal engine is nearly unmatched, so it's not the most fair comparison, but there are a lot of games coming out now that are made for the PS5/Series X generation that are upscaling from below 1080p, and often times even 720p, using AI upscaling, to get the best performance. I have seen the effectiveness of these new upscaling techniques and while they certainly are getting the job done with a mostly clean image, it's games like Gears 5 that make me question whether that approach is the right direction. Gears 5 shows that you do not need the newest graphical features like ray tracing, lumen, or nanite to impress. Yes, the newest graphical techniques do look better, but there is a measurable loss in resolution and performance cost to going down that path. Gears 5 stays above 1440p at all times and stays nearly locked to 60fps, and I'd much rather have the clarity and sharpness with a smooth framerate than better shadows, textures, and lighting.
But Graphics certainly aren't everything. Gameplay and story will keep me engaged in a game far better than how it looks, and again, Gears 5 improves upon 4 in both aspects. Story first. Now that the locust from the original trilogy have somewhat ressurrected as an evolved form called the Swarm, humanity as a whole is once again fighting for survival and trying to find a way to beat them back. Like in Gears of War 2, you get to see battlefields where other soldiers are also fighting the enemy, giving you the sense of being a soldier in a much larger war. This is no longer you and your 2 friends vs the horde. It feels much bigger and with much higher stakes. There are also quite a few direct references to Gears 2, my favorite in the series, so it feels like the world is consistent and connected. I liked the story more than 4, but not as much as 2.
The first and fourth acts are structured linearly like the older entries in the series, while the 2nd and 3rd acts are open environment exploration-driven sections with story points at certain locations around the world. The game takes influence from God of War (2018) and this is a nice evolution/contrast from the rest of the series. Being that Gears is a shooter, and not a game with huge character progression (e.g. the gradual accumulation of abilities in Metroid prime games), there aren't really areas that prevent you from exploring them. If you find something off the beaten path, you can explore it right away. The exploration is well done, but it can slow the pacing down significantly, and make the game drag, especially on replays.
To incentivize you to explore, there are collectibles throughout the game, and upgrades parts hidden throughout the world that are used to power up your personal robot companion, Jack. Jack can now help you in battle in a multitude of ways. You will get specific new abilities at certain points in the story, then be able to improve those abilities through upgrade parts found in the world. Each upgrade is relatively inexpensive, but there are so many that you will need to find over 400 little upgrade parts in the environment throughout the whole game to fully upgrade Jack, and there exist only 16 more than the total you need. This is another thing that slows the game down, and the reason why I took 20 hours to finish. I had to find them all. You can save jack upgrade progression between playthroughs thankfully, but if you ever want to find the parts again, that option is available as well.
Gears 5 controls just as well as any entry in the series. In fact, maybe a bit tighter than 4 or 1. It definitely has less input lag than 4. The gameplay loop in 5 is more expanded than in past entries because of Jack's abilities. Though admittedly, a fully upgraded jack does break some of the difficulty even on Insane. Enemies are are smart and move around. They try to flush you out of cover, and keep you on your toes. If only this game didn't slow down so much at times, it could be the best Gears game besides 2. It's that good. 89/100

GEARS 5 -in terms of both gameplay and story- is a mess but also an improvement over the fourth installment. While 4 was content with preserving the series' linear structure, 5 is a weird mish-mash of linear levels and semi-open world sections. Like the rest of the game, these semi-open world sections are a mixed bag.On the one hand, they aren't like your typical (Ubisoft) sandboxes where the maps are cluttered with the same missions copied and pasted over and over. A breath of fresh air in this market, for sure. On the other hand, there isn't a whole lot to do in these sections, which makes me wonder why they weren't just linear levels to begin with.
It's exciting at first when you venture out into the wild on Kait's skiff (which is fun to control), but there is a lot of empty space in-between, and the areas quickly wear out their welcome; I was ready to move on after a few missions in each area. Overall, I applaud them for trying something different, but it ends up being little more than padding for what is currently the longest game in the series.
Kait's connection to the Swarm (and the Locust, for that matter) is the driving force of the game's story, and... it's intriguing at first but is given an underwhelming payoff. She's tormented by the voice of Myrrah throughout the first half. Her loyalty (and sanity) is called into question by the rest of the cast. How exciting!
SPOILERS: But then she severs her connection to the hive, and that plotline is dropped all together. I would've loved it if there was a choice between preserving her connection to the hive or destroying it. You know what? That would have been a better way to introduce choices and consequences to the series instead of stapling one on near the end in what is, honestly, one of the game's more baffling creative decisions.
And that's the story for this game in a nutshell: a long series of half finished plotlines. JD is slowly becoming a COG-loving fascist until he isn't. I didn't like this development to begin with, and it's made all the worse by having such a hasty, half-assed conclusion. What was even the point of making him "evil" in the first half other than to fuel meaningless drama between the main cast? I could go on about how weird and all over the place the writing in this game is, but I'll leave it at that.
So, what about the core gameplay? You know, the cover-based shooting. Well, it's still fun. All of the quality of life improvements you've come to expect are here, as well as Jack playing a more prominent role in the game's combat, with the ability to stun, freeze, and electrocute enemies. It's a fun addition to the series.
At the end of the day, I'd still recommend GEARS 5, but you should wait for a sale before picking it up. Honestly, the Gears series should have ended with 3.
My ranking of the series (so far):
1: Gears of War 2 8/10
2: Gears of War 3 8/10
3: Gears of War 8/10
4: Gears 5 6/10
5: Gears of War 4 6/10

Don't believe the haters Gears 5 is a fantastic game that is a must play.Quite possibly the best showcase for the Unreal Engine 4 engine.
The Coalition are wizards with Unreal Engine as this game is a technical showcase for the old Xbox One and even the Series X.
343 Industries could learn a thing or two from The Coalition and I support the idea of the next Halo being made with Unreal Engine.
While many fans of the classic trilogy can't seem to pry off their nostalgia goggles.
I can appreciate what Gears 5 brings to the table.
Kate Diaz has been promoted as the main protagonist and I feel it was a good decision.
JD Fenix demoted to support role but his character improves because of it.
The shooting mechanics of the Gears franchise has always been solid and I can say the same for Gears 5.
Moment to moment action is fun and challenging and it just keeps you wanting to play more.
They did add a light stealth element to the gameplay that helps in thinning out areas of baddies before breaking out into a firefight.
Design wise the game has been opened up a bit into a semi opened world with secrets to find and hidden locations to explore.
While it's true there are sections that are a bit sparse, it is a welcome break from the action at times.

An okay-ish experience, with some major issuesI don't get why the two open areas with a few random side-quests dotted in are included in this game. Not every game needs to be open-world, especially not executed this poorly.
Combat can be a bit of a slog, you're quite often stuck behind a waist-high wall taking potshots at enemies extremely far in the distance. Enemies take forever to kill, while they kill you much quicker. Sure you can get revived, but it means you cannot go ham and charge them.
The upgrade system sucks, having to look in every corner of the map breaks the pacing, but the jack upgrades are quite powerful.
Constantly running out of ammo in some levels isn't fun, in general picking up ammo is a chore. Why do I have to press and hold the interact button just to pick up bullets?
AI teammates are useless against bigger enemies as they cannot hit heads or other weak spots. They also constantly move into your line of fire and then complain about friendly fire. I've blown myself up more than once because one of the idiots strafed into view while I was firing the Boomshot.
It looks great and some loading stutters aside, it runs great too. The sound is mixed weird, with combat way too loud compared to conversations. But the quality of the sounds and (most of) the acting is quite good. The characters are mosly annoying and unlikable though.
Overall it's decent, but nothing memorable.
