This was a game that a former mutual of mine loved to praise as one of the best games ever. Looking at it in isolation however, it just doesn't seem like my kind of thing. The whole time loop thing I doubt is something that really appeals me.

I nominated this one, then finished it before it won the vote. I wrote pretty extensively about it in my blog thread. I had very mixed feelings. A substantial portion of the game is delightful and amazing, but just enough of the gameplay was insufferably frustrating that I can't give it all the same rave reviews I hear others give it. That said, I definitely understand why folks adore this game and it's worth experiencing if you haven't yet.

I played this one a few years ago. I really liked the story and atmosphere, and I was surprisingly competent at the flying too so I enjoyed the gameplay. The exploration was also pretty cool...in the first half. After I figured out all the puzzles I could, I just got stuck and couldn't progress anymore. Ended up having to use a guide to beat the game which soured the experience a bit. Still, I enjoyed my time with it.

Yes!
The kick in the rear I needed to finally get around to this game. Hopefully the high praise doesn't set me up for disappointment 😥

Okay still settling in to my new home so maybe sproadiac with my plays but anyway had my first session of Outer Wilds:

Jumped on a geyser and died. End of the game

Okay the more serious session after that:

Made it to brittle hollow and found the crashed ship and it's escape pods before following into the black hole and then reaching the white hole station and thus the north pole station on brittle hollow. Translated everything there and found the tablet in the white hole to see the other items in the area not exactly sure what they mean and then the sun collapsed and the loop repeated

Okay very opened ended will need to follow a few leads I think but will see where this leads me. Finding the controls a bit floaty although I am in space so maybe I can be more forgiving of it. Dependent on how annoying it gets

I see that you are playing on PC, so I will tell you right now: the space bar is your friend. A quick 2-3 second hold on it while in your ship or suit matches your velocity to the nearby environment. Drastically cuts down on the "floaty" feelings. I wish I had realized the usefulness of that and the "R" + mouse-movement-to-rotate function a lot sooner in my playthrough.

More exploration of brittle hollow. Damn theres alot here and it's only one planet. Starting to use the ship log and went to the moon first which pointed me to brittle hollow anyway from here I'm trying to find the other explorer but ended up wandering more around the area and finding the black hole station and school and got a series of plans which the nomai were attempting
— 07/12/2024 23:18
So I got into the observatory within brittle hollow which then directed me to Gian's Deep which is a large water planet with islands then are thrown up into space. Unique but was able to deal with the satellite that blows up at the start of each loop, looks lioke ti was sending probes and by the time I reached it had fired over 9 million probes. From here I got more information about the twin ashes project which seemed to what has caught me in a time loop and looks lime it's based on keeping information and passing it along in statues. After this the chain I was following hit a dead end so decided to go find the harmonic on the Timber Hearth which lead me to a seed from the dark bramble. Firing a probe within it shows that it's much larger then it appears. Going by that I'm going to dark bramble to find the harmonica
— 08/12/2024 22:59
Reached the harmonica in the dark bramble. Basically gave me information to reach the bottom of Giants deep which I had already done so bit of a dead end. Likely more in there but the anglerfish are going to be an issue so went back to get more information from the brittle hollow escape pod. Found the small area below and mentioned how the ship was swallowed by the dark bramble. Instead went to the tiwn ashes and found more information on the solar factory and the details surrounding that area. Found the cave at the bottom of the lake but there doesn't seem to be anything in it. I might try and see what happens after it fills with sand but for now trying to get to either the fossilised anglerfish or the sunless city. I think I also need to get to the equator of the ash twin.

So I've got a good idea of the game now and enjoying myself although IO feel that I'm reaching the end of most exploration options and going to start hitting barriers soon I am happy with what I've found so far. The log system allows me to map where I should look and what further information I am missing so while the game is open for you to reach the same conclusion it provides enough bread crumbing that you should have plans where to go next. It ios not perfect and the lack of handling the time loop is an issue. I have no way of resetting a time loop without finding a way to kill myself (which isn't too easy in this type of game) or quit the game and reload. It would also be good especially now I'm dealing with the twin ashes to have a way of speeding up time.

If you're interested in the QoL hack of speeding up time then have a chat with your companion on Giants deep, the one who plays clarinet/flute or whatever.

I am about 8ish hours in and really struggling to enjoy this game - on the verge of quitting or getting a cheat mod. Sheer stubbornness that I haven't done so already.

Just not seeing what the fuss is about, between the irritating controls, lack of checkpoints, endless repetition, lack of guidance, and slow restarts.

I don't mind difficult games, but I can't stand it when the game doesn't respect the player's time.

I'll probably give it one more session, and if still not making decent progress, I'll just cheat my way through.

I've completed the main game, saw two endings - a good one and a bad one.
Going to move on to the DLC tonight.

The base game has an amazing concept, but it's execution is terrible. Two thirds of my play time was spent either repeating the same things ad nauseum, or simply waiting around for time to pass (as most things are time dependent). The gameplay lacks basic QOL features and does not respect the player's time.

I ended up using a infinite oxygen and fuel mod as that alleviated some of the frustration. It boggles my mind why the designers would even limit your oxygen and fuel - it's an exploration game, but they restrict your ability to explore! I also needed to use a guide because some of the puzzles were too obtuse.

Beat the DLC today, once I got past the part I needed the guide for, it was smooth sailing until the end. The revelation that strangers actually came even before the Nomai was quite shocking and sad how things ended for them. I did the true ending again with the new knowledge and got some new dialogue out of it. If it wasn't for how tedious reaching the panels in the dream world was, it would've been enjoyable the whole way through, but those moments sour it quit a bit.

Will write a full review tomorrow.

Found my way into the anglefish cave and found out there blind. Used that to then find the third escape pod in the dark vessel and sequentially the larger vessel. Got into the cave under the lake in the twin ashes. But now basically hitting walls think i'm getting close to the end now. Need to reach the interloper and the sun lab next really and I think the final area will be the quantum moon
— 11/12/2024 22:11
Got within the interloper. I seem to be missing on of the logs but don't know why it hasn't been counted yet. Reached the sun station as well and was able to land on the quantum moon. I'm defiantly getting to the point where I need a guide but have been enjoying the loops if they are starting to get tedious
12/12/2024 22:17
Found the tower but did not know what to do. Instead wenmt and found the quantum rocks in both timber heath and giants hollow. Was able to use this information to get the tower moving. Although I was confused as it wanted the tower on the north pole. Didn't realise I was in the south pole and needed to change the moon to allow me to reach the north pole. The loop reset then so will need to keep going to reach the sixth location
13/12/2024 22:06
Got to the sixth location and met the living(?) nomai who answered more questions as well as more about the eye. Found the nomai mine under timber heath. Trying to reach the black hole forge now
14/12/2024 23:00
And that's the base game completed. I have to say that was a rather tripper ending. Overall enjopyed my time with the game. Really rewards exploring and the loppg writes down everything you have found so that is helpful for finding the relatvant information to get to the next step. It did end fall into the trap where you repeat yourself alot especially in the end game and there's some useful tools hidden away from the player. But overall a rather enjoyable game. Now onto the DLC

Review
+Open ended world with a great variety of planets to explore
+Does a great job of directing the player without spoiling it’s secrets
+Fascinating and intriguing story with multiple threads which all align to create the bigger picture
-Loop system becomes repetitive in the end
-Fails to explain a lot of the ease of life systems well in the game
-Can spend some time waiting for places to open
Overview
Outer wilds is a brilliant designed exploration game which has an open ended secret with mainly possibilities to reach the end conclusion. This is done with a great variety of different planets with there own mechanics and puzzles but they all merged together into one final end game conclusion. It does have issues where it main time loop mechanic can get repetitive especially in the end game where you have only a few locations left to find which don’t open until late into the time loop. It also does a bad job explaining some ease of life functionality in the game and hides them away from the user (such as marking a location or manipulating the loop). Overall an excellent exploration game well worth your time.

So reached the stranger and into the halo ring. Being going around when the dam collapsed. Was able to find a few slideshows to explain what's happening as it's not possible to translate the language in the area... at least yet. Looks like this species found out about the eye and tried to utilize it however a foresight was shown to them that it would destroy the universe so they destroyed the church and locked any knowledge of it

Bit off the beaten track to find the DLC tbh and it looks like it will be harder as there is currently no way of translating what is ion the new area. This might be harder then the base but we shall see
15/12/2024 22:28
So went and found the hidden village in the stranger and got further information on the hull breach giving me the opportunity to get into the lantern laboratory to find out that I need to sleep near a fire with an artifact to give it light. Doing that I think took me to the past and I went through the village before it collapsed. Found a tree image at the bottom. Also reached the bell prison and found out about the moving of the large artifact in there. Two further locations to discovery. The loop then reset

Beat the DLC today. Got the true ending. Similar thoughts as with the base game: amazing concept but poor execution.
Spent many hours just running around helplessly lost and getting nowhere, all the while becoming more and more frustrated. Eventually caved and looked it up.

I feel bad for rating it this low considering how much love this game receives, but this has to be my most disappointing gaming experience I've had in years. Thankfully I bought it on sale.

Gave the game 8/10, really great game. Might've been a 9/10 if it wasn't for one moment where I got stuck in the DLC. I posted my full review on my blog and the wins thread if you want to check it out.

Only the chance for one loop. Was able to get into the cabin in the shrouded forest and cause nothing of interest. But was able to get into the secret room in the cinder tower which gave me a passcode for the hidden building so now working on getting in there
18/12/2024 22:08
Okay so reached the hidden building and it pointed me to three hidden locations. I found the first one at the base of the resoivor and it showed me a hidden location in the manor house of the shrouded forest in the fireplace. I will head there later but I think IO should get the two other hidden projections first.

Okay so a big issue I'm finding with this DLC is that it's reliant on image matching. However there is no way of gettinig these images in game expect on the ship log. Making for a rather annoying issue where you have to find work arounds to find the items.
19/12/2024 22:35
Okay thats the DLC done. I did enjoy the DLC but not as much as the base game. It a few small things which annoyed me mainly the lack of passing images across runs was a nuisance and I also found the stealth sections tedious (although I liked the animation when you get caught real nice little flip of expectations there) but ultimately it worked as a micro version of the base game but based mainly on light puzzles and still did a good job breadcrumbing you to the end.

Echoes is a great addition to the base game with a completely new world to find with it’s own brutal little ending and series of puzzles based around light. It works well with the base system and slowly puts together the hints and tricks you need to reach the end. It however makes the lack of on person log an issue when it starts expecting the user to remember passcodes from the other side of the map for a door, it’s stealth sections are more a nuisance then an interesting new gameplay and the DLC is a bit too hidden in the base game that a lot people likely won’t find it without outside help.
